Calcium and magnesium cause hard water, and high levels hardness can generate limestone which precipitate and clog pipes. The best and inexpensive way to remove calcium and magnesium and also iron in household water systems is to use a water softener unit connected into the water supply line.

Hard water cause three major kinds of problems. The calcium and magnesium ions react with soaps and detergents, hindering their ability to lather properly and forming an unsightly precipitate (the familiar scum or "bathtub ring"). Hard water inhibits the cleaning effect of detergent formulations. More seriously, calcium and magnesium carbonates tend to adhere to the surfaces of pipes, hot water heater, and heat exchanger surfaces. The resulting scale build-up can restrict water flow in pipes. In boilers, the deposits act as thermal insulation that impedes the flow of heat into the water; this not only reduces heating efficiency, but allows the metal to overhea twhich causes increase cost.

Water softener is made up of two tanks mineral tank and brine tank. Mineral tank contains ion exchange resin. This high quality softening resin is used many years. When the resin is filled to capacity, it must be recharged. Fully automatic softeners regenerate on a
preset schedule and return to service automatically. Regeneration is started by a water use meters.
